What is protein modification?

Posted May 10, 2024

Answer

Protein modification refers to the process of altering the structure or chemical composition of a protein molecule after it has been synthesized. These modifications involve either cutting the protein into smaller pieces through proteolytic cleavage or adding various chemical groups like acetyl, phosphate, or methyl to specific amino acids within the protein structure. Additionally, entire proteins can be degraded. Protein modifications can occur at any point in the life cycle of a protein.
