What is enzyme catalysis?

Posted July 25, 2024

Answer

Enzyme catalysis is the process by which biological molecules known as enzymes increase the rate of a biochemical reaction. Most enzymes are proteins. Within an enzyme, catalysis usually occurs at a specific site called the active site. Enzymes are highly efficient, converting million molecules of reactants per second. However, the catalyst (enzyme) itself does not participate in the reaction and its composition and concentration remain unchanged throughout the process and after.
