What is apoptosis?

Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death. Although it is often referred to as ‘cellular suicide’, apoptosis does not have the negative connotations associated with suicide. It is in fact an essential part of development where cells ‘commit suicide’ on receiving certain cues.
