What is a reporter gene?

Posted June 20, 2024

Answer

A reporter gene is an exogenous coding region that researchers attach to a regulatory sequence of another gene of interest to measure promoter activity. The reporter gene produces a measurable product such as fluorescence or enzyme activity to indicate the expression level and pattern of the target gene.
