What are the physical properties of amides?

Posted June 17, 2024

Answer

Amides have high boiling and melting points because they are polar molecules capable of forming hydrogen bonds. Primary and secondary amides can engage in hydrogen bonding, while tertiary amides cannot. The majority of amides are solid at room temperature, except for formamide (HCONH), which is a liquid. Amides with fewer than five carbon atoms are soluble in water. However, solubility decreases as the size of the hydrocarbon substituent increases. Amide solutions in water are typically neutral, meaning they are neither acidic nor basic.
