What are the differences between mutation and evolution?

Posted July 31, 2024

Answer

Mutation

Mutation is a heritable change in the nucleotide sequence of the genome. It refers to the alteration of a gene’s structure, which creates a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations. A mutation is typically caused when a single base unit in DNA is altered or when larger sections of genes or chromosomes are rearranged, inserted, or deleted. It facilitates the production of new phenotypes and is the first step of evolution.

Evolution

Evolution refers to the process by which various types of living organisms are thought to have developed from earlier forms of the organism over a period of time. It is primarily responsible for the creation of a new organism that is best adapted to its environment. The overriding significance of evolution is that it helps create an organism that best fits the environment. It typically occurs after mutation.
