Answer
The terms lipophilic and hydrophilic describe the solubility of a compound. There are several differences between these two terms.
Lipophilic
- Refers to the ability of a substance to dissolve in lipids or fats
- Soluble only in lipophilic solvents such as lipid, oil, fat and nonpolar solvents such as hexane, etc.
- Chemical composition is mostly organic, nonpolar portions of molecules
- Examples include fat-soluble vitamins, amino acids, hormones, and hydrocarbon compounds among others
Hydrophilic
- Refers to the ability of a substance to dissolve in water or other hydrophilic solvents
- Soluble only in hydrophilic solvents such as water
- Contains polar functional groups
- Examples include sugars, salts, alcohols, and soap
