Answer

Basis of differentiation

Amine

Amide

Definition

Is a class of organic compounds derived from ammonia (NH3) in which one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups

Is a functional group characterized by a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to a nitrogen atom (N)

Carbonyl group

Does not have a carbonyl group present

Has a carbonyl group bound to the nitrogen atom

Properties

Has basic properties

Has acidic properties

Boiling point

Have comparatively lower boiling point

Have comparatively higher boiling points

Formation

Formed by the reaction between ammonia and a hydrocarbon

Formed by the reaction between carboxylic acids and amines or ammonia

Solubility

Soluble in water and the solubility decreases with the increase in the number of side chains

Shorter amides are exclusively soluble in water
