What are the applications of nested PCR?

There are several applications of nested PCR. One application is to enhance the sensitivity of PCR assays, especially when dealing with nucleic acid samples extracted from formalin-fixed tissue. This method is particularly effective for detecting microorganisms even when they are present in extremely low quantities. Nested PCR is also used to differentiate between closely related sequences or alleles within a gene family allowing researchers to detect polymorphisms.
