What are the applications of electrophoresis?

Electrophoresis is a technique used to separate macromolecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins, in a fluid or gel under the influence of an electric field. This separation is based on the size, charge, and binding affinity of the molecules. Electrophoresis has a wide range of applications including:

  • DNA Analysis: Electrophoresis is widely used to separate DNA into segments in DNA analysis. The negative charge of DNA ensures uniform force application during separation. Agarose or acrylamide gels are commonly used as the medium, which freezes the separated segments in place once the electric current is removed. Electrophoresis enables high-resolution examination of DNA structure, making it easier to analyze DNA architecture and identify DNA fragments.
  • Protein Detection:  Immunoelectrophoresis is a type of electrophoresis used to detect and analyze various proteins and their chemical reactions in different conditions. It is used to identify abnormal protein molecules caused by medical conditions such as kidney failure, multiple sclerosis, and different types of cancer. It is also used to detect immunoglobulins, which are a type of protein. 
  • Testing Antibiotics: Electrophoresis is used to test the purity and potency of antibiotics. In addition to differentiating between the antibiotic and impurities, it also determines the concentration of the antibiotic, which is vital for applying accurate dosages. Electrophoresis also plays a role in genetic testing, helping to identify genes that may indicate resistance to specific antibiotics. 
  • Protein and Antibody Interactions: Immunoelectrophoresis, a form of electrophoresis, enables detection of specific proteins called immunoglobulins, which act as antibodies. These antibodies are part of the immune system and attack foreign proteins such as allergens or viruses. Analyzing these antibodies can help researchers to better understand conditions such as allergies and autoimmune disorders, which result from malfunctioning antibodies. Analyzing antibodies using immunoelectrophoresis also helps in identifying new therapies to treat foreign invaders. 
  • Explosives Chemical and Residue Analysis: Capillary electrophoresis is used to trace organic and inorganic gunshot residues and explosives. Miceller Electro kinetic capillary chromatography is used to examine organic gunpowder additives like diphenylamine, nitroglycerin, and ethylcentralite. 
  • Analysis of Drug Abuse: Capillary electrophoresis is widely used in forensic toxicology and drug abuse detection to detect illicit drugs in unique organic samples such as hair, tissue, body fluids, and nails. 
  • Vaccine Testing: In vaccine development and production electrophoresis is utilized to detect antibodies and ensure the consistency and purity of production batches. It helps in evaluating the effectiveness of vaccines and maintaining quality control during production.
