What are microsatellites?

Microsatellites are short DNA segments with lengths that range from 1 to 6 or more base pairs, which are repeated at a particular genomic location multiple times in succession. Microsatellites are also known as short sequence repeats (SSR) or short tandem repeats (STRs).
