What are antibodies?

Posted May 14, 2024

Answer

Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins that are produced by the immune system in response to an infection. When a foreign pathogen enters the body, antibodies bind to the unwanted substance and eliminate them from the system. They are also known as immunoglobulins.

Their ability to bind to an unlimited number of target proteins with high specificity make antibodies a vital tool in biomedical research.
