Is DNA an organelle?

Posted August 26, 2022

Answer

No, DNA is not an organelle. DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule that is found inside an organelle called the nucleus. It holds the instructions for growth and development in all living organisms. A DNA molecule is made up of four nitrogenous bases, which form two strands that bind together in a double helix formation. Three vital functions of DNA molecules include:

  • Replication, in which a DNA strand makes a copy of itself during cellular division
  • Encoding, in which the codons in DNA direct the formation of proteins
  • Cellular management, which involves monitoring the division and duplication of the fertilized cell or zygote
