How is mounting medium used in microscopy?
Posted April 6, 2023
Mounting medium is a liquid or gel substance that is used in microscopy to fix and preserve samples on a slide for observation under a microscope. There are different types of mounting media available. The type of sample being observed and the type of microscope being used for observation are two main factors that determine which type of mounting media to use. For example, aqueous mounting media are used for samples that are soluble in water, while non-aqueous mounting media are used for samples that are insoluble in water. To use mounting medium, the sample is first prepared on a slide and allowed to dry completely. The mounting medium is then added to the slide, covering the sample completely. A cover slip is placed on top of the mounting medium to seal the sample and prevent contamination. The excess mounting medium is then wiped away, and the slide is ready for observation under a microscope.
