How do the carbocyanine dyes work?

Answer
Carbocyanine dyes are lipophilic, cationic, and highly fluorescent in lipid bilayers. When inserted into the plasma membrane, these dyes label the entire cell by diffusing laterally and inserting alkyl chains into the lipid bilayer. These dyes are weakly fluorescent until incorporated into the plasma membrane.
