What is the role of Tau protein aggregation in neurodegeneration?

Answer
Tau proteins are a group of proteins that are abundant in neurons and play a role in stabilizing microtubules and regulates microtubule-mediated axonal transport. When Tau proteins become defective and stop stabilizing microtubules, they form aggregates called neurofibrillary tangles that are toxic to neurons, thus causing neurogenerative diseases.
