Is the Golgi apparatus important?

Posted April 2, 2021

Answer

The Golgi apparatus is a significant organelle in cells because it helps process, sort, package, and transport proteins and lipid molecules to targeted destinations within the cell or outside of it. Without a Golgi apparatus proteins and lipid molecules would essentially float around in the cytoplasm without any direction. This would affect the functionality of organelles and other cells that rely on products processed by the Golgi. For instance, the Golgi apparatus is responsible for the formation of lysosomes and the digestive enzymes it contains. Without the Golgi apparatus there would be no lysosomes in cells, and cells would not be able to digest or break down materials. Excess debris would build up within the cell and eventually the cell would die.
